Bellissima Italia

Bellissima Italia

The Italian Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macao is coordinating the initiative Bellissima Italia, a festival composed of about 40 events, dedicated to the promotion of Italian culture, lifestyle, and iconic Made in Italy products, spanning from the end of September to the beginning of December. The initiative will use a new logo, registered as a trademark in accordance with the Hong Kong law, and a company coordinating the organization of the events that will be transformed in a non-profit organisation, as soon as possible.

The 2015 edition will focus on music, with events dedicated to opera and contemporary music, Italian food and wine, with plenty of opportunity to taste the best products of the Italian wineries, and Italian style, applied to design and fashion.

For the 2015 edition of the festival we aim at collecting under a unique brand (Bellissima Italia) the events that are planned in autumn by different organizations. We would like to underline the relevance of each event also from a social and educational point of view, so to reach out to the local community. We hope that promoting all the events in a single container (Bellissima Italia) we will get to each and every event more relevance on the Hong Kong printed and digital media.

Working since 2015 under the new Bellissima Italia logo will give us the opportunity to submit a report about our activity to potential donors in order to apply for additional funding for the next editions.

Pino Pinelli solo exhibition “Pittura”

The first solo exhibition of works by Milan-based artist Pino Pinelli in Asia, titled “Pittura” (Italian for the act of “making painting”), presents 12 of the artist’s works, which are unified by red and grey. The works on show span nearly 40 years of the artist’s career and include both important and historical works from the 1970s and 1980s.
Pino Pinelli (b. 1938, Catania, Sicily, Italy) was deeply influenced by the Zero Group, which in reaction to Abstract Expressionism argued that art should be void of colour, motion, and individual expression. During a period of reflection and research at the beginning of the 1970s, the artist focused on the essential link between tradition and innovation.
From 1976 onwards, Pinelli abandoned the canvas and frame to focus on the concept of painting itself, challenging the idea of a painting limited by edges and opening up the perspective of a constantly moving painting inside the phenomenal changing world. The artist’s works are unsettling particles that wander through space in wide or small combinations, showing tactile physicality and the visual beauty of colours.

Italian fashion Workshop: History of blue jeans

Blue Jeans are the most iconic garments of our times. But we tend to see them as an all American thing and few know that the word Jeans actually originates from the Italian seaport of Genoa and that denim (the cloth used to create a pair of Blue Jeans) comes from the French city of Nimes. Angelo Paratico has been studying and working in this field for over thirty years, publishing essays on this thrilling subject, he is willing to share with us his expertise: speaking about the history of denim, how it is produced and which may be the latest fashion trends. Furthermore he will explain to us also the antiquarian value of old Blue Jeans. You may not know it but at the bottom of your wardrobe - under a pile of old rags - you may find a treasure! Angelo Paratico is vice President of Candiani Denim (Far East) Ltd. A World Leader for the production of high quality denim fabrics.

Italian movie “My Italian Secret” at the Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival

The Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival will take place at the Asia Society Hong Kong Centre. This year it will be showing a wonderful and fascinating Italian film that has been produced in Italy and depicts a proud and relatively unknown chapter of Italian history: “My Italian Secret” (http://myitaliansecret.com/).
Synopsis: Would you risk your life to save a stranger and never talk about it?  My Italian Secret tells the story of sports idol Gino Bartali and other courageous Italians who carried out ingenious schemes to rescue Jews, partisans and refugees from Nazi-occupied Italy.  Gino Bartali is a sports legend; but his most daring triumph came when he risked his life over and over to save Jews threatened by Nazi extermination. The story of Bartali and the secret network he worked with stands in for the stories of thousands of Italians who risked their lives to save others from capture and death. As an entire continent was engulfed in a genocide which took the lives of most Jews in Nazi occupied Europe (nearly 6 million people), more than 80 percent of Italy's Jews survived. Bartali, like most of the rescuers, never sought recognition or reward. Few of those he helped knew his name or what role he played in their rescue.

Italian fashion Workshop: Italian tie and etiquette

In Italian it is called cravatta, lingjié in Chinese, in Spanish corbata, kravate in German, cravate in French, nekutai in Japanese, bandana in Sanskrit, sudarium in Latin, cravat in English, necktie in the USA. Mr. Paratico will give a presentation on the history of the tie - from Neolithic times until today - with useful tips on selecting & wear the proper one which will reflect our personality and our spirit, and then he will also give us some hints about the proper knotting technique. Few people known that, mathematically speaking, there are 84 different ways to tie a knot of a tie!
The death of the tie was announced several times in the past years but this accessory for men is proving as indispensable and resilient as ever and, as a matter of fact, it is not going down the same way of the bowtie which is generally speaking gone out of fashion after receiving a lot of bad press during the 70s-80s. With his tie on a man will proudly look stronger, slimmer, taller, due to the verticality of the line. A tie will complete a man’s uniform and a man wearing a peace-loving uniform - today as in the past – will radiate confidence. All salesmen known that if you dress like a general, people will think you are a general, until the contrary could be demonstrated. While it has been scientifically proven in the lab that most girls dislike men wearing Hawaiian shirts it is also safe to say that they do love men wearing gorgeous ties. Come to learn more about it!

Opera Workshop  “Il Trovatore”

Giuseppe Verdi's romantic tragedy "Il Trovatore" will be performed in Hong Kong by Musica Viva this December. It is a story about love, rebellion, suicide and honour. Unusually for the period, it also raises questions about identity, racial prejudice and discrimination. The so-called "Anvil" or "Gypsies' chorus" is immediately recognizable, but the opera is filled with stirring arias and duets. But "Il Trovatore" is one opera for which a "know before you go" workshop is almost essential. It has one of the most complicated plots in all opera! It is set in medieval Spain during an interminable civil war; there's a long back story involving two generations of gypsies, accusations of witchcraft, burnings at the stake, switched babies, tournaments, unknown knights and battles. We'll go through the story and the musical highlights, featuring some of the famous singers, historical and modern, that have sung this masterpiece.
